Meet the counselors who care for your children after school
Olufunto Adebo
After School Care Counselor
Languages: English, Yoruba
Funto, a public relations major at The University of Texas at Austin, loves working with children when she is not busy being a student. She has volunteered at her church’s nursery and Mother’s Day Out program, and has been babysitting since the age of 12. But, she says, “working at AIS has been an experience unlike any other!” Perhaps that is because she doesn’t speak any French and has the children teaching her a little every day.
Diego Fiala
After School Care Coordinator
Languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese, French
Diego has worked with AIS students since 2008 during our after school care and summer camp. He is currently working toward a BA in international business at Austin Community College. He has previously worked as an X-Box technical support representative at Harte-Hanks.
Tedra Jacobs
After School Care Counselor
Languages: English, Spanish
Children learn from their many experiences and sociocultural influences, Tedra says about her approach to childcare. “Since we are all so different, we can learn some of our best lesson from each other.” She is excited to work with the culturally diverse group of children and expects to learn from them as much as they learn from her. Tedra is a crafty gal, and looks forward to drawing out children’s creativity. She is a senior pre-med student also majoring in economics and ethnic studies at The University of Texas at Austin. Tedra worked as a mentor and math tutor at River City Youth Foundation, a non-profit organization in east Austin, for the past three years.
Diane Rivas
After School Care Counselor
Languages: English, Spanish, French
Diane began at AIS in 2011 and is currently a student at The University of Texas at Austin. She has worked as a youth soccer coach and volunteered with elementary schools in Dallas as a mentor and tutor. At AIS, she says, she has the opportunity to interact with children of many different cultures and backgrounds. She has previously worked as a secretary in a Dallas law firm.
Hilary Routon
After School Care Counselor
Languages: English, French
Hilary began as an after school care counselor at AIS in 2011, and as a French major in college she now loves being able to speak French at work. She also enjoys being able to learn about all of the interesting backgrounds of the children and their parents while spending time caring for them after school. Hilary followed her love of language and culture to Rennes, France, for an academic semester, and later taught English to middle and high school students on Martinique. She has also worked at the International Civil Rights Center and Museum in Grensboro, North Carolina, as an aministrative assistant. She received her BA in French Language and Literature and Sociology/Anthropology from Guilford College in Greensboro, NC.
Mimi Ubani
After School Care Counselor
Language: English
“If you love the kids, everything else will fall into place,” Mimi says of her experiences working with children. A child care counselor at AIS since August 2010, Mimi loves that there are so many cultures and languages spoken at the school. She has worked at The University of Texas Law School and also designs clothes for UT Austin fashion shows. She is working toward her BA in public relations at The University of Texas at Austin.
