Thinking Globally and Acting Locally

Our vision is to live in a world of "global citizens with strong interpersonal skills who will interact positively with people from all cultural backgrounds and adapt to ever-changing international conditions." Essential to working towards our vision is to develop a culture of service in our school through which students learn to ivestigate issues of contemporary global importance, prepare and plan to engage with them, carry out actions to contrinute to global betterness, reflect on the experience, and demonstrate their learning to others. By connecting classroom learning to community needs, our students will:

  • apply academic, social, and personal skills to improve the community;
  • make decisions that have real, not hypothetical results;
  • grow as individuals, gain respect for peers, and increase civic participation;
  • experience success no matter what their ability level;
  • gain a deeper understanding of themselves, their community, and society; and
  • develop as leaders who take initiative, solve problems, work as a team, and demonstrate their abilities while and through helping others.
Our Service Learning Plan

AIS's 2016-2021 Strategic Plan specifically identifies the integration of service learning into our curriculum. Milestones towards achieving this objective include:

  • February 2017: Preliminary documentation of the AIS Service Learning Plan
  • March 2017: Identification of grade level Service Learning Themes and Goals
  • May 2017: Identification of local Service Learning partners
  • June 2017: Documentation of Service Learning resources
  • September 2017: Introduction of Service Learning to AIS students
  • October 2017: AIS staff professional development on service learning
  • January 2018: AIS Service Learning Week (engagement with the community)
  • February 2018: Reflection on Service Learning and planning for improvements
