Music

At AIS, we believe in nurturing students' musical talents through comprehensive instruction and diverse performance opportunities. Our middle school students receive specialized music education, including dedicated strings classes that help them develop both technical skills and musical appreciation.

Beyond the regular curriculum, we offer several engaging afterschool music programs. Students can join our Strings Ensemble, which provides advanced performance opportunities, or begin their journey with Strings 1 for those new to string instruments. Our piano program allows students to explore keyboard fundamentals and classical repertoire, while the ukulele program offers a fun, accessible entry point for stringed instruments.

These afterschool offerings give students additional opportunities to develop their musical abilities, collaborate with peers, and discover the joy of making music together.

In our String Ensemble program, students choose between violin, viola, or cello, developing both individual skills and the art of playing together. Through focused instruction and practice, students learn to master their chosen instrument while discovering the joy of collaborative music-making in a supportive environment. They develop essential musicianship skills, learning to listen and respond to their fellow performers while building technical proficiency. Students build confidence, form lasting friendships, and work together toward shared musical goals, creating a strong sense of community within the ensemble. The program culminates in a spring concert where students proudly showcase their musical achievements and growth to family and friends.

Classes led by Mr. Steve Duprez—a seasoned cellist with over 50 years of experience. He's also part of Austin's Balcones Community Orchestra!

The violin and viola class offers collaborative learning for both instruments. The primary focus is on technique, posture, bowing, and fingering. Students delve into music theory, sight-reading, and ensemble playing, honing their skills in a supportive environment. Through group activities, ensemble pieces, and performances, students develop their musical abilities while fostering camaraderie among classmates.

Taylor Swift vs. Spiderman
Swifties and Superhero lovers unite!  This class will take students on a parody-writing adventure as we create an epic musical trilogy by rewriting lyrics to popular songs.  Songs will feature easy beginner ukulele chords and students will learn to strum and sing along as the songs come to life over the course of the spring semester.  Class will wrap up with a triumphant live performance at the end of the semester!
